This is the difference between a crossover and an SUV
Recently, crossover car types have become increasingly popular. However, there are quite a few who don't know the difference between it and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).
Crossover is the popular name for Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV). At first glance it looks similar to an SUV. This is what makes many people not aware that there is actually a big difference between crossovers and SUVs.
If you observe, crossovers and SUVs are almost the same. These two types of cars often have a distinctive appearance that gives a masculine impression. The ground clearance is high and the roof design is also almost the same.
However, even though they look the same, crossovers are basically different from SUVs. Want to know what the differences are? These are the things that differentiate crossovers from SUVs.
Chassis Structure
The basic difference between crossovers and SUVs lies in the chassis structure. In Crossover cars, the platform used is the same as Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) cars. Both use a unibody structure. This means that the body and chassis of the car consist of one complete part.
This structure is different from an SUV. The SUV platform is very similar to a light truck. The body frame and chassis are assembled separately or often referred to as body on frame. This design was chosen because the SUV is intended to traverse rough terrain, so it has the same platform as a loaded car.
Design
From the outside appearance, it is difficult to differentiate between a crossover and an SUV. However, if you look closely there are obvious design differences.
Crossover cars tend to be smaller than SUVs. Apart from that, the ground clearance is also lower. Likewise with smaller tire sizes.
This is because the Crossover design actually comes from a combination of an SUV with a sedan or hatchback. This design makes the interior of the crossover tend to be more spacious. Finally, it is able to provide more comfort for the passengers inside.
Meanwhile, the SUV looks bigger than the Crossover. Starting from body size, tires, to ground clearance, it is always bigger and higher. Thanks to that, when compared to a crossover, the loading capacity of an SUV is also much greater.
Abilities
The dashing appearance of the Crossover is not without purpose. Crossovers are designed to be able to go off-road. However, keep in mind, its capabilities are only limited to light off-road terrain.
Crossovers cannot be used to traverse rough roads. This type of car is actually more suitable for use on on-road terrain. The design allows the car to have greater buoyancy and provides more comfort on smooth roads.
Apart from that, the crossover is designed to use a two-wheel drive system, either front or rear wheels. This further shows its character as a street oriented car. Therefore, crossovers are more suitable for driving in urban areas with good road conditions.
This is different from SUVs which use a four-wheel drive system. The SUV will be able to run on challenging roads with ease. Various convenient features such as a built-in winch and all-terrain tires are embedded in it.
The distinctive chassis design reduces noise when off-road. This also makes SUVs more suitable for use on various types of tough roads. On the other hand, SUVs are not suitable if used as daily vehicles in cities with smoothly paved roads.
That's the difference between a crossover and an SUV. Which do you prefer?
