Don't underestimate a problematic alternator
The alternator is one of the components that supports the car's electrical system. Make sure there are no problems with the alternator so that the vehicle's performance remains optimal.
Another name for an ampere dynamo, the position of the alternator is located in the car engine. Its existence functions as an electricity generator for the vehicle as well as a distributor for the car's electronic components.
The alternator must always be in top condition. If it is damaged, the electricity supply to the car components will be disrupted. Imagine if that happened. There will be many disturbances experienced.
How an Alternator Works
The operation of the alternator is closely related to the car battery. The vehicle gets its electricity source from there. This is what makes the position of the alternator vital in the electrical system.
To get an electric current supply from the battery, an alternator component is needed. Later the alternator will rotate following the engine rotation. The faster the engine rotates, the greater the electric current produced by the alternator. This also applies vice versa.
So, when the alternator has a problem, the car's electrical system will be disrupted.
What are the Impacts of Alternator Problems?
When the alternator's function is disrupted, the car's electrical components will generally fail to function. The electric current can be lost.
The impact can be seen in various car components. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU), for example, will fail to carry out its function of controlling various components.
Not only that, the car battery will definitely be damaged. The current in the car battery will be completely absorbed by the electrical components. In the end, the battery will be damaged more quickly.
Apart from that, many of today's car support equipment uses electricity. Everything will be disturbed. In fact, it is not impossible that the car will be difficult to start or even break down.
Alternator Damage Indicator
Symptoms of alternator damage need to be detected as soon as possible if you don't want the car's electricity to be disrupted. You can find out in several ways.
First, look at the indicator light. In older model cars, alternator damage can be seen from the battery indicator light coming on. Meanwhile, in the latest cars, alternator problems can be detected from the engine indicator light.
However, apart from indicator lights, the condition of the car lights can also be an indicator that the alternator is starting to have problems. The car lights should remain bright when turned on while stationary. However, if it is dim and improves at high engine speed, it is very likely that the alternator is damaged. Checking the condition of the alternator must be carried out as soon as possible.
What Should You Do If the Alternator Is Broken?
A damaged alternator should be replaced. Even though it can be repaired, usually the repaired alternator won't last long. Damage can reappear at any time.
Then, if you really want to repair it, look at the damaged part. If the damage is only in the diode or rectifier and brush components, repairs can indeed be carried out. However, it is different if the damage is in the stator or rotor coil. The alternator must be replaced.
This is because the biggest trigger for alternator damage is mostly the end of its service life. So, there is a service life that has reached the end. However, other factors such as installing various aftermarket accessories in the car can also affect the durability of the alternator.
As vital as the role and function of the alternator is, any perceived disturbance must be watched out for. Don't let it break in the middle of the road because it will definitely be a hassle.
