Lane Keeping Assist Keeps the Car in Its Lane
The current road conditions are increasingly busy. If a car deviates from its lane, it will be very dangerous. Therefore, using Lane Keeping Assist will help.
Driving on the right track will minimize the potential for accidents. The car will drive safely. However, often this cannot be done. Whether due to the driver's lack of concentration, fatigue, or other reasons, the car can veer out of its lane.
This can have fatal consequences. Accidents can occur if the vehicle shifts from the driving lane accidentally. For this reason, safety support technology such as Lane Keeping Assist can be useful.
What is Lane Keeping Assist?
Often referred to as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist is an electronic system that warns the driver when the vehicle he is driving deviates from its lane. Automatically, Lane Keeping Assist will warn once it is activated.
There are various forms of warning. Some use alarms, notification sounds, vibrations, and even light signs on the driver's dashboard. However, there are also Lane Keeping Assist which is able to automatically correct the steering itself to return to the right lane.
Even so, a warning will not appear if the driver deliberately leaves the lane. For example, you want to change lanes or turn. Simply by activating the turn signal, Lane Keeping Assist will not correct the car's movement.
Lane Keeping Assist is presented as a solution to the vulnerability that arises from driving that deviates from the lane. This is considered dangerous because it can trigger traffic accidents.
How Does It Work?
Each car manufacturer has a different Lane Keeping Assist working system. However, in general, this safety supporting technology relies on sensors or cameras to carry out its operations.
Sensors or cameras will be installed at the front and rear of the car. Usually these components are placed in the windscreen area.
Thanks to that, the speed of the car will be detected in the system. Once you find a deviant movement, notifications or steering corrections will occur automatically.
However, the Lane Keeping Assist system requires a clear view of the road lane. The path must be marked and not blocked, so that the system can work optimally. If the sign is missing or closed, then road lane identification cannot work, so the system does not function properly.
The use of Lane Keeping Assist has been proven to really support traffic safety. Based on GIDAS research results in 2011, if it were used, around 26% of accidents could be prevented.
Suitable for quiet highways
Lane Keeping Assist will really help the driver in keeping the driver on track. However, this system can only be implemented at a certain speed. Usually the speed range is between 65 to 180 km per hour.
Apart from that, Lane Keeping Assist also requires a cornering radius of at least 230 meters. Not surprisingly, this system is more suitable for use on quiet highways.
You can even experience inconvenience if you use it on busy roads such as in the city. Traffic density often forces drivers to change lanes. Imagine if the Lane Keeping Assist warning continued to appear in these conditions? The driver may feel distracted.
It is recommended that Lane Keeping Assist only be activated on freeways where the car can go fast. This will be very helpful for drivers who may experience decreased concentration due to fatigue due to long journeys.
However, not many cars are equipped with Lane Keeping Assist. However, in the future it is believed that conditions will be different. This system will be popular so that accidental shifts of the car's speed out of its lane will be minimized.
