Let's find out the vital role and types of car brake pads
Good braking is a must for a vehicle. To achieve this, the condition of the brake system components must be optimal. One of them is the brake lining which plays a vital role.
Brake linings are needed to help vehicle braking. There are two types of brake systems commonly used in cars, namely drum brakes and disc brakes.
Drum brakes are an old type of brake. In this system, the brake lining is located on the brake shoe. This is a component that is shaped like a circle consisting of two shoes with a semicircular shape.
When you press the brake pedal, the brake lining will push out. The brake pads are wide open so they rub against the drum housing bowl. This friction can ultimately make the car stop.
It's different with disc brakes. In this system, the brake lining functions to press the disc to provide friction. This is what will stop or reduce the speed of the vehicle.
Because it plays a vital role, the condition of the canvas must always be optimal. When the brakes feel too deep, it could be that the brake pads are thinning. In addition, no noise should appear during braking. Likewise with the presence of vibrations when the brake pedal is pressed.
However, apart from being in prime condition, the brake lining material must be good so that it can play a vital role in the braking system. Therefore, understanding the various types of brake linings will be very useful in making a choice.
The following are the various brake pads on the market.
â— Organic Brake Pads
Often called non-metallic brake linings, this type is made from a variety of different materials mixed together. Usually the material consists of a mixture of rubber, glass, carbon, resin and other materials.
Organic brake linings are the softest type of brake lining. Braking with this pad is softer and quieter. Not only that, the canvas is able to grip the disc well. Therefore, these brake linings are suitable for daily vehicles.
However, organic brake linings wear out faster than other types of brake linings. Apart from that, it requires a certain hot temperature for maximum performance. However, if it is too hot, there is a possibility that the brake lining will actually lose friction.
â— Semi Metallic Brake Pads
This brake lining is made of metal or iron, copper, and coated with graphite for lubricant. The composition varies, depending on the brand chosen.
Unlike organic brake linings, semi metallic brake linings do not need a certain temperature to work optimally. For this reason, this canvas is often used in off-road vehicles.
This type of brake lining has quite good rotor cooling capabilities. However, the resulting braking sound can be louder. Apart from that, friction can also thin the drum. In fact, these brake linings leave residue and dust that can be annoying.
However, compared to organic brake linings, semi-metallic brake linings are more suitable for high-performance vehicles. The price also tends to be more expensive.
â— Ceramic Brake Pads
As the name suggests, this brake lining material comes from ceramic. That's what gives it its own advantage. Compared to other types of brake linings, ceramic brake linings are more resistant to hot temperatures.
When the brake pedal is pressed repeatedly, the brake pads will still function optimally. There is no possibility of losing performance even if used to brake continuously. It's not surprising, sports cars often use it.
Ceramic brake pads also tend to be quieter. No residue is left behind. Because of these various advantages, this type of brake lining is the most expensive.
The vital role of brakes and how they work is well known. Now you just have to decide which type of brake lining to choose. Just choose according to your needs and available budget.
