Understand the Function and How Airbags Work in Cars
Safety support facilities in cars have now developed rapidly. Now it is not unusual to see cars equipped with airbags. However, how do airbags actually function and work?
Airbags are a protective device for passengers in cars from fatal collisions. This tool is a complement to the safety belt. When a hard impact occurs, the safety belt will keep the body in the chair. However, the shock that follows can throw the body. If that happens, the head, neck and chest could hit the inside of the car.
To ensure that this does not have fatal consequences, airbags are provided. Later airbags will protect vital parts of the body such as the head, neck and chest from dangerous collisions with the inside of the vehicle.
The location of the airbag in the car can vary, depending on the type. However, usually the airbags are in the front area on the driver's side and on the sides as well as in the rear area on the passenger side.
To protect body parts from impact, airbags are designed in such a way. Airbags are air bags made of thin nylon with small holes. Such a design makes it able to protect the body from the threat of fatal accidents when a collision occurs.
Airbags work based on sensors installed in the car. This sensor is active and immediately sends a signal so that the airbag inflates when a collision or hard impact occurs. Usually airbags detect a collision when there is an impact when the car is driven at a speed of at least 16 km/h or 24 km/h.
When a collision occurs, the car sensor will immediately send a signal and make the wire in the sensor become hot. This heating produces a certain amount of Nitrogen gas which fills the airbag so that the bag inflates.
Please note, this sensor is capable of reacting sodium azide (NaN3) with potassium (KN03) to produce nitrogen. Then the nitrogen explosion causes the airbag to inflate instantly at a speed of around 300 km/h. This process only takes about 1/25 of a second.
GUARANTEED SAFE
As a means of supporting safety in cars, airbag safety is guaranteed. Don't panic, when it first inflates there will be smoke filling the car cabin as well as a loud sound that seems noisy.
The loud sound is a sign that the sensor is working to activate the airbag. Meanwhile, the white powder is corn powder or talcum powder in the airbag. The powder functions to keep the airbag from sticking. It is very dangerous if the airbag cannot inflate when a collision occurs.
If possible, immediately open the car door or window when the airbag deploys. Breathe as usual. Then, there's no harm in washing the part of the body that is exposed to the powder to ensure that irritation doesn't occur on the skin.
Because it is made of nylon, the airbag will not injure the body. Apart from that, it is certain that the airbag will not press on the body making it difficult to breathe. The presence of holes in the airbag is key. From there the nitrogen will immediately come out so that the airbag will slowly deflate by itself.
Even inhaled nitrogen will not be harmful. It should be noted that around 78 percent of the air we breathe contains nitrogen. Thus, there is no risk of respiratory problems due to airbags.
Do you understand the function and how airbags work? Once you know its use and working system, it is recommended that you take good care of it. Don't modify your vehicle carelessly because it is prone to disrupting the airbag system.
Some modifications that need to be considered are changing the steering wheel, instrument panel or dashboard, changing the front bumper or fender, changing the vehicle suspension, and adding electronic devices such as a two-way radio. If you want to make these changes, it is recommended to consult with a competent party so that the performance of the airbag is not compromised.
However, apart from airbags, tires are also an important component of driving safety. Therefore, choose quality tires such as Dunlop tires. Quality tires from Dunlop will guarantee safety on the road.
