Understand the Difference between Coating and PPF on Car Bodies
Everyone will love having a car with a body that is always shiny and beautiful. Many ways to do it. Some apply coating to the car body and others choose Paint Protection Film (PPF).
There is nothing wrong, both coating and PPF have benefits for car body care. No need to choose one. If you want, the two actually need to be combined. The reason is, there are actually differences in the uses of coating and PPF.
So what really is the difference between coating and PPF? Let's look at the following explanation.
Car Body PPF
Many people are mistaken in thinking that PPF is the same as coating. In fact, the two are actually different. PPF is a way to protect the car body by placing a film layer on it.
To make it easier to understand, the working principle of PPF is similar to laminating. This means that the car body is wrapped in a special layer of film which is usually made from thermoplastic urethane.
The presence of a film layer on top is what ultimately protects the car body. PPF can protect the car body from fine scratches due to various things, such as scratches when washing. Apart from that, the application of PPF is also able to keep the car's color bright because it has "self healing" properties.
Because it uses a wrap, the main function of PPF is actually to maintain the originality of the vehicle paint color. When coated with film, PPF can maintain the car's original color for up to 10 years without maintenance.
However, this still needs proof. The reason is, PPF does not have the “taro leaf effect” when exposed to water. This is prone to triggering the growth of fungus on the car body, so that the car body may become dull.
The price of PPF treatment tends to be expensive. Customers usually have to pay up to around ten percent of the car price. Not many people are skilled and master this method. Not surprisingly, the popularity of PPF in car maintenance is still low.
Moreover, there are high risks behind its implementation. When scratched, the PPF must be replaced one panel at a time. This is what makes not many people want to implement it.
Car Body Coating
Coating is a popular car body treatment. This method is done by coating the body with special chemicals. Later, this step will make the car body shinier and less dull. Apart from that, the vehicle's distinctive color also stands out.
Currently there are many types of coating. For example, there are known nano coatings, ceramic coatings, and waxing. The thing that makes the difference is the material used to coat the car body. For example, nano ceramic uses a special nano-sized liquid content, while ceramic coating uses a special ceramic content.
Each type of coating has advantages and disadvantages. However, in general, coating functions to protect the car body from mold, scale, and ultraviolet rays which make the car's color dull. Apart from that, coating is also useful in protecting the car body from fine scratches.
Car owners can choose coating if they want to restore the car's original color. However, the results of this method cannot last forever. Coating must be done again every five years or depending on the condition of the car.
The price of coating varies depending on the type. However, the costs incurred are much cheaper than PPF. Usually it is in the range of IDR 2 million to IDR 5 million.
When scratched, coating does not need to be applied to all car body panels. Coating can be done on the affected points. This is what makes it more popular because it is considered practical and economical.
Which to Choose?
After understanding the difference between coating and PPF, car owners can make a choice. However, if you want maximum results, it is recommended to combine the two. Because PPF and coating can complement each other.
Coating can make your car look like new again. Therefore, the coating is applied first. After that, the new car body is given additional protection in the form of a film layer with PPF. This will make the color of the car always beautiful all the time.
