What Actually Are Low Profile Tires?
Low profile tires are a term that refers to tires with narrower sidewalls. This can be identified visually. Compared to high profile tires, there are obvious differences. The sides are indeed smaller.
However, identifying only based on observation can be less accurate. It's better to look at the aspect ratio value on the tire. Usually the value is listed on the sidewall of the tire.
There are three numbers listed there. To see low profile tires, look at the second number. If the value is below or equal to 55, then the tire is a low profile tire.
The calculation is easy like this. The second number shows the percentage of tire wall height compared to tire width. For example, the numbers 215/55/17. This shows that the tire wall height is 55% of 215 mm which is the tire width. So, the height is only 118.25 mm.

â—Tires Noisier
It could be that the sound produced by the tires will be much louder than regular tires. The noise level in the cabin also increases.
â—Tires are more easily damaged
Compared to high profile tires, the possibility of low profile tires being damaged is higher. Tires also wear out faster so the replacement period is shorter.
â—Steering Can Feel Hard
Low profile tires can make the car feel hard. The narrow and stiff tire wall design is the cause.
Considerations Before Using Low Profile Tires
Now is the time to decide whether to use low profile tires or not. To make a decision, just look at the pluses and minuses. From there the determination can be made. Does the character of the tire match what is desired?
However, one thing is certain, low profile tires are more often used on vehicles used for sporting activities. Apart from that, this tire is often the choice for those who want to experience the sensation of driving a high-performance car.
Its reliability for cornering and good grip enable the car to go fast. The design also allows for the installation of larger brakes so that braking can be more responsive.
You can use it if you really want that kind of driving character. However, if not, low profile tires are not recommended for daily use. The tires will feel less comfortable and harder. If there is an uneven surface, a large shock will be felt. In fact, low profile tires should be avoided for SUV vehicles.
Not only that, the price of low profile tires tends to be more expensive than regular tires. This can also be a consideration because flat tires are more prone to damage. Tire costs are definitely higher.
So, do you still want to use low profile tires? The choice is yours.
