Vehicle Number Plates Change to White as of June 2022
Since the beginning of 2021, news about vehicle number plates changing color has been widely discussed. To be precise, in January 2022, the Head of the Public Information Bureau, Police Public Relations Division, said that this policy would begin in stages. This color changing plate policy occurs so that the implementation of electronic traffic tickets or Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) can run effectively. What exactly will this new policy look like? Check out the complete explanation below, Drivemate!
Changes in motorbike plate color in Indonesia
Changes to vehicle number plates are regulated in Perpol Number 7 of 2021 Article 45 Paragraph 1 (a) which reads, “Motorized Vehicle Number Plates (TNKB) belonging to individuals, legal entities Representatives of Foreign Countries (PNA), and International Bodies will be white with black writing.”
Even though the legal basis has been in place since 2021, the authorities will only implement this regulation in 2022. As stated above, the color change plate policy has been in place since January 2022 in stages throughout Indonesia. This happened because the National Police Traffic Corps was still waiting for materials for the new vehicle number plates.
The authorities say that people should not rush to change their vehicle number plates. The public will receive a new color plate when the TNKB validity period expires, buying a new vehicle, extending the STNK, and changing the owner of the vehicle. That way, if your vehicle still has a black number plate and you don't need to replace it yet, there's no need to rush.
Who is this rule for?
As briefly stated above, this new regulation will apply to motorized vehicles owned by private individuals, legal entities, PNA, and also international bodies. Meanwhile, general motorized vehicles still use yellow vehicle number plates with black writing. Motorized vehicles belonging to government agencies remain red with white writing, while vehicle number plates in free trade areas have green with black writing.
Why change the color to white?
The National Police said that to make the implementation of ETLE effective, vehicle number plates must be replaced with white. The reason is, the camera has the property of absorbing black, so vehicle number plates with that color will be difficult for the camera to capture. Usually, an error will occur when reading certain letters or numbers.
To anticipate errors when carrying out electronic tickets, the National Police ordered the plates to change color. This policy has of course gone through various studies and is also reflected in countries that have implemented ETLE.
How much does it cost to replace a number plate?
If Drivemate is worried about the cost of changing number plates, the National Police stated that there will be no change in costs. It is time for the color of the vehicle number plate to be changed. This means that if your vehicle's number plate is still usable and it's not yet time to replace it, then Drivemate doesn't need to bother changing it.
Changes to vehicle number plates will still follow the fees stated because basically, only the color of the plate and the writing change. The provisions for size, thickness and materials remain the same.
The funds you need to prepare when replacing a number plate are stated in Government Regulation Number 60/2016. In this regulation, it is written that the TNKB issuance fee for two-wheeled vehicles is IDR 60,000, while for four-wheeled vehicles or more it is IDR 100,000. Usually, Drivemate will be required to change the vehicle number plate when paying the five-yearly tax.
That is an explanation of the color change plate policy which will begin this year in stages. Make sure you always check when to change your vehicle's number plate so you don't get a ticket on the road!
