How Vital is the Contact Patch for Tires?
Among the various vehicle components, only the tires are in direct contact with the road. However, if you look more closely, only a small portion of the tires experience direct contact with the road surface. That's a vital contact patch.
Tires rub against the road surface to gain traction so the vehicle can move. The tires then spin when acceleration is carried out. Apart from that, tires also rub on the road when the car's speed is reduced or stopped.
However, all of these processes actually only occur in the tire contact patch. Therefore, the contact patch has an important meaning for the tire.
What Actually is a Tire Contact Patch?
The tire contact patch is the outer part of the tire that is in direct contact with the road surface when the vehicle is moving. The size varies depending on the type of tire, its condition, and vehicle settings.
However, don't imagine that the contact patch area is very wide. If observed, usually the area is no more than the surface of the hand.
To find out the exact contact patch area of the tire, if possible, look at the tire from below the surface it is passing over. From there it will be clear that the area is very small.
Apart from that, you can also attach paper and coat the tires with special ink. Then, drive the vehicle past the paper. The tire marks printed on the paper are the area of your tire contact patch.
Vital for Vehicles
Contact patches are very important for vehicles. Only in these areas, the connection between the vehicle and the road occurs. Apart from that, the area and shape of the contact patch will affect various things such as control, traction and driving comfort.
For example, for low profile tires. The contact patches there tend to be short and wide. This will affect the tire's better control, traction and turning ability.
It's different with high profile tires. Usually the contact patch is longer and narrower. It is easy to find in various types of passenger or freight vehicles. This is because the contact patch is needed to support vehicle comfort with easy handling and control.
Many end up setting the contact patch in such a way as to achieve the desired vehicle performance. This is often done for vehicles that require more than normal traction and control.
For example for racing vehicles. For good acceleration, tires must be designed to be able to go fast easily. This can be achieved by setting the contact patch to a certain level.
Factors that Influence Contact Patches
The contact patch on each tire must be unique. The area and shape vary. Here are some factors that influence the difference.
â— Tire Pressure
The air pressure in the tire greatly influences the area of the tire contact patch. When the pressure is high, the contact patch will decrease. However, this is also influenced by the load factor carried by the vehicle. The heavier the load, the more the tire contact patch will increase.
Even so, the effect is not directly proportional. In the sense that if you increase the air pressure by 10% it doesn't mean that the contact patch will definitely increase by 10% too.
Nevertheless, it is still recommended to fill the tire pressure according to recommendations. Too little or too much will interfere with control, turning maneuvers or fuel consumption.
However, for racing vehicles, tires are often given more pressure than normal. The aim is to improve steering and stability when turning.

Tyre alignment also affects the contact patch. The settings made will affect its area and shape. For example, setting maximum negative camber, aggressive toe, or maximum positive caster can provide different contact patch results.
Drivers can adjust the alignment as they wish according to their needs and vehicle type. The arrangement can provide certain tire performance. However, for passenger cars used for daily mobility, standard settings can be chosen because they are sufficient.
Contact patches are vital in supporting tire performance. However, the setup is quite complex. So, if the vehicle is only used for transportation, it is better to leave it according to standards. Tire and vehicle manufacturers have made arrangements that can ensure that the tire contact patch supports the safety and comfort of the tire for driving.
