Tips for Choosing Practical Car Rims
The rim is one of the components that plays an important role in the aesthetics of the car. By using the right rims, the beauty of the car immediately increases. It's not surprising that many people like to replace standard factory rims with other rims
That's fine, but don't just replace it. Not only aesthetics, rims are also closely related to the wheels and tires which is important in terms of safety.
Therefore, choosing rims should not be done carelessly. Consider the following things before making a choice.
Specifications
The basic thing that needs to be considered when choosing car rims is the specifications. This is very vital because if the specifications do not match, the rim will not be able to be installed. It's a loss if you've already bought it.
Therefore, pay attention to a number of things on a rim. First, look at the size of the Pitch Center Diameter (PCD) of the rim. This is a measure of the distance between one bolt hole and another.
Find out the size by looking at the specifications listed on the car rim. For example, the rim says 4×100. This means that the rim has 4 bolt holes with a PCD of 100 mm. Make sure the rim you want to buy has the same specifications as the one that has been installed.
Apart from the PCD, also pay attention to the offset or distance between the inside center of the rim and the mounting surface of the rim on the car's legs. The offset size is very vital in determining the distance from which the outer rim lip of the car fender exits or enters. The difference in thickness of the center circle on the inside of the rim which will contact the rim mounting surface is the determining factor.
If the offset value is small, the outer lip of the rim will move further out from the fender. On the other hand, if the offset value is greater, it means that the front of the rim will go deeper into the fender. Adjust this value to the condition of the car so that it fits.
Also consider the diameter and width. This is no less important because there is a maximum rim size for each car. So, if you want to change the rim to a larger size than before, then keep the increase in size chosen within a tolerable range. Usually a maximum of 3 levels or known as up size +3.
A similar calculation applies to rim width. There is a tolerance limit that must be considered. Therefore, adjust it to the car's maximum limit.
Materials
The rim material can be another consideration. If you want a light weight, it is recommended to choose billet steel, forged alloy, or magnesium.
By using light rims, the overall weight of the car will be reduced. For those who like speed, this is very important. However, in general, light rims will reduce the workload of the car engine which can no longer support a heavy car. In the end, even though it is not significant, fuel consumption can be reduced.
However, if you don't care about the weight of the rim, feel free to choose steel. These rims will still support driving comfort and will not affect general engine performance.
Model
The model is often the basis for selecting car rims. Models are related to aesthetics so this will come back to each person's taste. However, in general, rims are divided into two types, namely one piece and three pieces.
As the name suggests, the one piece rim model is in one piece. This makes this rim more durable but tends to be heavy. Even so, the choice of motifs and brands is quite varied. Very suitable for those who want rims in the 16-18 inch range.
It's different with the three pieces model. This rim consists of 3 parts but is usually lighter. There are quite a lot of model choices and they are easy to replace if they are damaged.
The only drawback is that the strength is not as good as one piece rims. Apart from that, the price is more expensive than one piece rims. However, these rims are more widely available in large sizes in the 19-22 inch range. Suitable for those who like to “play” on big rims.
Have you thought about what rims to choose? Please determine according to your budget. However, don't forget the safety factor. Choose rims that will not interfere with the car's maneuvering so that driving is always safe.
