What is the role of tires in supporting braking?
Tires are very important for vehicle safety. This is absolutely true because tires are proven to play a crucial role in supporting braking.
Tires are the only car component that is in direct contact with the road surface. Cars also drive using tires. However, the vital role of tires is not only to ensure the car can move well. More than that, tires also support safety by ensuring that braking can work properly.
Car Braking Principles
Broadly speaking, a car carries out three processes in car braking. Each process has its own use. However, everything is interrelated.
â— Friction and Gravity Transfer of Cars
The brake system is generally based on the friction between the tires and the road surface. Cars have a brake system which is useful for increasing the load on the tires. This is then used to create friction to reduce the vehicle's speed.
Friction occurs when the tire stops rotating and is static. As a result, there is a friction effect on the two surfaces. The squeaking sound during braking is a clear example.
In this process, the vehicle's center of gravity shifts according to the active brakes. However, usually, braking will start with the front brake then followed by the rear wheels.
â— Converting Kinetic Energy into Heat Energy
The braking process is also related to the change in kinetic energy into heat. When the brake is activated, the car cannot stop immediately. Vehicles tend to stay in motion. This is because the engine cannot lose one hundred percent of its driving force.
So, to reduce speed, kinetic force is converted into heat. When a vehicle brakes, friction forces will occur. At that moment, the changing speed of the wheel's rotation “is conjured” gets hot. Then the heat energy that appears will be immediately thrown into the air.
â— The principle of the lever on the brake pedal with hydraulic pressure
You need to understand that the brake pedal works with a lever principle that is able to change small pedal pressure to greater pressure right in the master cylinder. When the brake pedal is pressed, the master cylinder will convert the applied pressure to hydraulic
The pressure obtained will then be channeled to the wheel cylinder or brake caliper on the car drum. With Pascal's law, this will activate the brake disc pad or brake canvas to reduce tire rotation.
The Role of Tires in Braking
Braking is a complex system. The process behind it is quite a lot. However, in general, braking occurs when friction between the tires and the road can move the car's gravity.
When friction occurs, at the same time, kinetic energy is also converted into heat. Apart from that, the master cylinder also changes the brake pedal lever principle to hydraulic to reduce speed.
This series of processes allows braking to be carried out. However, in order to be able to run well, you need tires that are in prime condition.
Apart from car brakes, tires are the component that makes the car actually stop. The friction force allows this to happen. Later, the friction between the tires and the road surface will ultimately stop the vehicle's speed.
Not surprisingly, the role of tires in braking is very important. The car only has four tires. Then, the area of the tire that touches the road surface is no bigger than the palm of your hand. Therefore, the tires must be in good condition so that braking can run optimally.
To be sure, the condition of the tire tread is key. Make sure the treads haven't been eroded and the tire grooves are still deep, so that the car gets optimal traction.
Tires that are thin or worn unevenly will make braking difficult. Traction can be lost so that the brakes are not optimal. This becomes even more vulnerable when driving on wet roads.
Therefore, for braking to work well, the tires must be in good condition. Without it, braking will not be optimal because the tires stop the vehicle on the road surface.
So, make sure the tires are always in good condition so that driving safety is maintained.
