What is Plus Sizing for the Right Rims and Tires?
Many people like cars with bigger tires and rims. These changes are seen to increase aesthetic value. The technique for doing this is known as plus sizing. So, how to do plus sizing correctly?
In short, plus sizing is a method of increasing the dimensions and size of the rim by increasing one level from the standard or original equipment (OE) size. This technique became popular in the United States in the 1970s. However, its popularity is still maintained to this day.
By implementing plus sizing, apart from improving aesthetics, there are several advantages that are believed to be obtained. Here are some of them:
â— Increases tire traction and grip.
â— Makes it easier to control the vehicle when turning
â— Brakes better.
â— Ground clearance could be higher.
These various benefits make many parties want to implement plus sizing. However, you need careful calculations when you want to do plus sizing. Because, there are risks involved if there is an implementation error.
Therefore, its implementation must be precise. Here are several things that must be taken into account so that plus sizing runs well.
Select the desired technique
Plus sizing has several different techniques. Please choose which one you want to use
â— Plus Zero
The plus sizing technique uses the same diameter rim as the OE rim. However, there has been a change in tire size which has become larger. Apart from that, the tire aspect ratio is also reduced.
An example of its application is as follows. For example, 185/55ZR16 tires or 16×6” with 185/55R tires. With plus zero, the tire will be changed to size 195/50ZR16 or 205/45ZR16.
â— Plus One/Two
Plus one/two is a plus sizing technique by increasing the tire and rim diameter by one or two inches from the standard size. Usually the increased size starts from 15 inches or 16 inches.
When applying plus one, the 15 inch tires and rims are changed to 16 inches. However, at plus two, the changeover becomes 17 inches.
Especially for plus two, its application requires extra caution. Choose wider tires with a smaller aspect ratio. The goal is to maintain the original tire height and obtain the correct load index.
Adhere to Security Principles
Plus sizing is possible. However, caution still needs to be exercised so that vehicle safety continues to be guaranteed. To do this, there are principles that can be adhered to.
First, pay attention to the outside diameter (od) or the outer diameter of the tire that will be used when changing the rim to a larger diameter. The size should remain the same as the OE tire even if the rim is changed to be bigger. In other words, the size of the new tire needs to be taken into account when replacing the rim.
Next, look at the tire aspect ratio. When you want to replace a rim with a larger diameter, the tire aspect ratio must be smaller. This is important for vehicle comfort.
The ability of thin or low profile tires to absorb vibrations is not as good as standard tires. As a result, the vibrations are more pronounced and the car's undercarriage can be disturbed so that it breaks down quickly.
Not only that, larger rim and tire diameters will make the steering system's rotating load is heavier. This can result in faster steering gear wear. Even tie-rod ends, ball-joints, and wheel bearings can have a short life.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to only apply plus one in plus sizing. However, if you still want it bigger, use a maximum of plus two. The application example is as follows:
- 175/70R13 = (575.2mm) > 185/60R14 > 195/50R15 > 185/45R16
- 175/65R14 = (583.1mm) > 185/55R15 > 195/45R16 > 205/40R17
- 185/55R15 = (584.5mm) > 195/45R16 > 205/40R17
- 215/55R16 = (642.9mm) > 235/50R16 > 225/45R17 > 235/40R18
- 235/55R17 = (690.3mm) > 255/45R18 > 255/40R19
If you replace the rim with a larger one while paying attention to the aspect ratio of the tire, comfort will still be achieved. In addition, there is no need to recalibrate the speedometer.
That's how to add sizing for the right rims and tires. Make sure to do this so that the safety and comfort of the vehicle is maintained.
